Why are we so interested in whom our ex is dating?

by Gayla McCord on April 23rd, 2007

We’ve all been there or had someone close to us who is overly consumed by whom the ex is dating.

How many times have you found that you’re comparing yourself to the new love in your ex’s life?

Why do you think that is?

Why do we feel the need to compare ourselves to other people around us?

I had a friend who recently split with her partner of 5 years. The partner had cheated and immediately moved in with the new love after having moved out of the family home.

My friend has been plagued with questioning her own beauty, attractiveness and worth. She’s been consumed by wondering what she could have done to have changed the way the relationship progressed, shifted and ended.

What do you think? Ever been there? Do you think in the general scope of things, my friend could have done something to save her relationship?

I think she simply found herself in a relationship with a man who was prone to roam and she’s spending far too much time trying to figure out how to become the person he wants rather then moving on and becoming available to someone who is likely not to roam.

Thoughts?

I’ve been there after letting a cheater devastate me. I really questioned myself. Then on the flipside, there’s comparing yourself to an ex of a new guy you may be dating. It’s taken years of realizing beauty starts within me. Even now, sometimes it’s hard to break those old habits of doubting and being critical of yourself.

Because we are insecure…..why else would we compare? Your worried that they might take them back…
