When is Cheating NOT Cheating?

by Sasha Manuel on October 20th, 2007

Care to take a shot at an answer?

I believe a number of people can and will actually say it’s subjective. Some can come up with points to justify the act. Reasons? Excuses? Where do we draw the line?

This is one risk that a person will take when entering a relationship. The idea of cheating and being cheated. For the aggrieved party, it’ll be one hell of an experience. Though it can depend on one’s tolerance level, I guess.

Anyway, I digress.

So, when is it? Not cheating, I mean. Interested to know my answer? Get ready to hike up the high horse. Heh.

I’ve heard a lot of reasons-slash-excuses that some people have made. They think that the fact he cheated first gives her license to cheat in return. Or some would say they didn’t cheat because there’s no ‘love’ involved in the sexual encounter. Or the mentality, “what you don’t know won’t hurt you”, is applied, claiming that had he not found out about the affair or fling, the subject of cheating would not been part of the equation.

Personally, cheating cannot be classified geographically as some people may claim. I don’t believe that it’s not cheating even though he and I do live in different countries. Emotion or lack thereof, in the sexual affair or one-night stand is not indicative of the level of “cheating-ness”. It’s pretty much black and white. There’s no gray matter. By principle, cheating IS cheating when there’s another person involved, which can instill doubt and shake the foundation of the relationship — breaking of the trust established between the partners.

I’m not saying that I’ll consider that my guy cheated if he so much as look at another girl. I’m not. He can appreciate beautiful women but it’s quite silly not to acknowledge the fact that men are such visual creatures. My only condition is for him NOT to keep it from me. Once there are secrets, esp ones that involve other women (sex or without sex), that’s a cause for doubts and will form in some way a situation that resembles cheating.

And that, my friends, are a few of my thoughts on the matter. What about you?
