The Scent of Attraction

by Michelle Smith on September 17th, 2008

Do you wear perfume?  Is scent a part of your daily beauty routine?  Cosmopolitan.com reports:

“Research suggests that perfume not only makes you feel more attractive, but it can also act as a carnal catalyst. The more you know about scents, the better you can harness their power.”

The type of scent you chose determines the type of man you attract.

If you chose something like Armani Code Pour Femme, with it’s fresh citrus influences, you are going to attract men “who are uncomplicated and enterprising.”  Uncomplicated?  Sounds refreshing to me.  Looking for a “reflective loner,” then mist yourself with a scent with oriental notes, like the classics Opium or Shalimar.

Ryann Hayman,  in The Scents of Seduction at On the record magazine,  talks about the subject of scent more in depth, covering particular scents and their effect on the body.  For example, cinnamon is believed to aid in romance by increasing blood flow to certain body parts.

We all know that scents can trigger memories.  I can clearly remember a day more than 20 years ago, right after my now-boyfriend was my newly ex-boyfriend when this happened.  While working in a restaurant, I smelled a scent that reminded me so much of him that I was in tears. (I’m really not good with break-ups).  I can’t describe the scent, but my nose knows it. I’ve smelled it numerous times over the years and I always have a physical reaction to it.

These days he smells me all the time.  He does this deep inhale and then, “Mmm…”  Wow - I feel that all the way down to my toes. I love it and I will forever hoard my citrus scented spray that Bath and Body no longer carries for this very reason.  As I mentioned in, Looking Great For That First Date, I may chose flip flops over sexy heels, but smelling good is a daily requirement.

Wearing perfume has it’s perks and disadvantages. With my fiancé, he said that he knew I was into him because of the fact that I wore perfume even though we were just hanging out outside. But recently, I committed the faux pas of trying a new perfume, which one of his ex’s wore. Needless to say I dumped that sample, because I certainly don’t want to remind him of an ex that he didn’t like.

Good idea, Kristi. Scents are really tied into memories.

After writing that post, I’m all excited about picking some perfume out.

I totally agree with your blog on memories and certain smells.

My boys love to use all that male body wash like Axe. They picked one that smelled like their Dad. I said no more of that. I do not want to smell him. It truly does envoke too many memories.

One time when my ex wore the same aftershave as my dad I always felt weird when he would hug me. I would say–ugh, I feel like I am kissing me dad. That is just wrong. lol

That is funny about your ex’s aftershave, Jackie. :D
