Online Sex: My Space or Yours?

by Gayla McCord on April 9th, 2008

Online chatting venues, from IRC to AOL MySpace, seem to have replaced the function of the gay bar and now provides a way for gay men to connect with other gay men. “Gay daters were some of the earliest, if not the first, to utilize the web for meeting potential partners. In the initial days of on online dating, users searched for profiles that looked interesting and eligible to them, whether that be for a relationship of a short-term encounter”, said Patrick H. Perrine, MA, CEO and Founder of myPartner.com, who has worked in the field of human sexuality since 1997.

What began as a twinkle in Al Gore’s eye and a networking that took among academics quickly blossomed into the most prolific titty and prick show the world has ever known. Just Google the word “sex” and you’ll see the pursuit of happiness easily dwarfs the quest for reasonably priced airline tickets as the most popular on-line pastime. But how did the Internet change the face of hooking up; and what does the future hold? Edge spoke, sans our yummy interns, with a few pundits, entrepreneurs and academics to get the skinny on online sex.

I believe there is a well defined evil that shadows many of these online forums these days.  Cheating has become easier then ever and more people are searching outside their marriage for the occasional hookup - and even venture to guess a growing portion of these hookups are ‘exploratory’ in nature with both men and women wishing to maintain their existing life while taking a walk on the ‘bi-sexual’ side.

I’ve seen this happen in relationships of couples I know personally and have to imagine it’s happening far more than many care to admit.

However, on the flip side of that coin, I think it’s important for sites to exist that provide those looking for a ‘no strings attached’ type of encounter to be able to hook up with like minded adults.  This would almost have to keep the serious portion of the population a bit more safe from threats of sexually transmitted diseases and broken hearts.
