Meet the Parents
It’s that time of year when everyone seems to want to find a date to take to those long boring family dinners - and hope to avoid those torturous questions like:
“When are you going to settle down?”
But, when you take a ‘date’ to a dinner, you’re likely tossing them on that hot seat of embarrassing questions.
This time of year always reminds me of the time I was drug off to meet the parents of a former boyfriend.
One would naturally assume they were about to be introduced to ‘normal’ people - pleasantries would be exchanged, conversation not to extend beyond the weather and the how’ya doin’s… right?
So Wrong!
When he arrived to pick me up, I was all decked out in a nice mini-skirt, a cute little sweater, shoes to die for with a perfect hair and make-up day going. You’d have thought that he would have said something - but he didn’t! At least not until we arrived at his parents house and with his on the doorknob while walking in. Then he decided to tell me…His father was a Pilgram Holiness minister. If you don’t know what that is, look it up. What you’ll find is one of two religions that would instantly look at a girl dressed like me and gasp in fear - gasp because they were suddenly thrust in the presence of Jezibelle. I’m guessing they prayed for a week just to cast those evil spirits I drug into their house on those three inch heels.
I don’t recall much about that visit, because I believe it lasted all of three minutes - but it sure didn’t take me long to realize that my boyfriend was using me to avoid having to spend the day with his parents.
The real shocker came when three months later, he and I moved in together - where we would remain a couple living in sin for 3 years.
Have you ever used a date to avoid your parents?
Ever have one of those really awkward “Meet the parent” moments?
Surely I’m not a lone wolf out here…
Am I?
