Are You Dating a Liar?
Ask anyone how to recognize a liar and your liable to get more answers then Carter has pills. With as many variations of signs, there are some that have become commonplace in the world of skeptics.
Expansion & Contraction - A liar tends to expand contractions. So instead of saying “I wasn’t at the bar with another woman” a liar will draw it out an emphasiz their words more like this… “I was not at the bar with another woman.”
Ah, Uhh, Ohhh, Ummm - A liar will always stutter with their words. They tend to draw out their answers with pauses, uhhh or ohhhh to give them that extra millisecond to come up with a likely story.
The language of a liar - Dr. James Pennebaker of the University of Texas and Dr. Dianne Berry of SMU discovered certain patterns in language of people hiding the truth. Emotional words like “hurt” and “angry” are used less when a person’s fabricating a story from a sitting position, as are cognitive words such as “understand” or “realize.”
Of course there’s the age old tell-tale sign of not being able to look the person in the eye when lying.
And the belief that the Fairy Tale, Pinnochio was founded on where a persons nose actually itches when a lie is being told. So watch for a person to touch their nose frequently. If they do, they’re likely lying.
